CEC vs FSW vs FST: Which Express Entry Program Fits You?
- Worked 1+ year in Canada? You probably qualify for CEC, the simplest program.
- Only foreign experience? FSW: you'll need 67/100 points and proof of funds.
- Skilled trade? FST: lower language bar, but you need a job offer or a certificate of qualification.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
CEC is built for temporary residents already working in Canada: PGWP holders, spousal open work permit holders and LMIA workers. IRCC has held 18 CEC draws in 2026, more than any other type except PNP. Self-employment and work during full-time study don't count. Check your CRS score as a CEC candidate.
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
FSW is the main route from abroad. Before you enter the pool you must score 67/100 on six factors: language, education, experience, age, job offer and adaptability. Check the 67-point grid. FSW candidates are invited through general and category-based draws (healthcare, French, STEM and others).
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
FST has the lowest language requirement, but you need a full-time job offer for at least one year or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province or territory. Trades draws in 2026 had cut-offs around 476.

FAQ
Is CEC better than FSW?
If you qualify, CEC usually has advantages: no proof of funds, no 67-point grid, and its own frequent draws. FSW is the main route for people with only foreign work experience.
Can I qualify for more than one Express Entry program?
Yes. IRCC checks your profile against all three programs and you can be invited under any one you're eligible for.
